Franz Schubert's ``Winterreise,'' written in , is about alienation and despair set against a landscape of snow and ice. It is easy to read ``Winterreise'' as the sequel to Schubert's earlier Muller cycle, ``Die Schone Mullerin.''/5(9).

Fischer-Dieskau's recital career began equally early and impressively -- with a Radio Berlin broadcast of Schubert's Winterreise; however, it was with his first concerts and recordings with the English collaborative pianist Gerald Moore that his international fame began to spread.

I just purchased “The Very Best of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau”, a two disk album of German lieder, (love songs). He is advertised as the greatest interpreter ever, of this type of music. Fischer-Dieskau is a baritone of indifferent quality at best, so it is difficult for me to comment favorably on these recordings.4/5(6).

However, if I'm honest, it's because it gives a tiny glimpse of what this voice is capable of. Of course, Schubert lieder are all about subtlety and understated raw emotion, but for Kaufmann reflects this in a rather thin tone at times, lacking the perfectly judged poignancy of e.g. the great Dietrich Fischer Dieskau or Andreas Schmidt/5(61).
